The Dutch artist family Ziesenis primarily consists of its progenitor
Anthonie Ziesenis and his sons
Bartholomeus Wilhelmus Henricus (B.W.H.),
Jan Christian and
Reinier in Amsterdam. Further Reinier's son
Reinier Anthonij Christiaan Ziesenis and B.W.H.'s grandson
Carl Eduard Ahrendts belong to this family.
The talented draughtsman
Johannes Ziesenis, second son of
Anthonie Ziesenis
(1731-1801), obtained education in drawing and painting by the famous artists
Jurriaan Andriessen (..-..) and
Adriaan de Lelie (1755-1820).
He was appointed to succeed his father as sculptor and to continue the workshop. However, he became sickly and died early at the age of 28.
A number of life-drawings, two drawings in watercolours and some sketches which are known through printworks by his brother Reinier Ziesenis proof for his artistic talent.
The less known third son of the sulptor Anthonie Ziesenis, the illustrator Reinier Ziesenis, was as talented as his two elder brothers, but led a less spectecular life.
He was educated in the sculpture by his father and in illustration, graphic arts and architecture by other masters. After the death of his father he continued the family workshop for a while, established a family and finally worked assistant of the city master builder
Abraham van der Hart (1747-1820) from 1808 till the end of his life.
His artwork comprises a number of prints and drawings of stage scenes and landscapes.
Although well documented in literatur and historic sources, instead of the forementioned
Reinier Ziesenis some dictionaries and registers of artists still indicate an ominous 'Zacharias Ziesenis' as the third son of the city sculptor
Anthonie Ziesenis.
This wrong statement traces back to a faulty information in the dictionary of Füßli published in 1821 (Allgemeines Künstlerlexikon part 2, p. 6178) which confuses facts to Reinier and Bartold Ziesenis with incorrect details regarding the succession of Anthonie Ziesenis in the function of city sculptor.
This only son of
Reinier Ziesenis was mostly called just
Christiaan Ziesenis and worked as clockmaker.
Since there is a single watercolour marine of him, signed 'R.A.C. Ziesenis f: 1832', in the collection of the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, he can also be recognized as a talented painter of landscapes.
